Two and a half, Relic
The objects in the photograph series are a set of postcard, the relic in Aachen Cathedral. Each of the sacred objects can be traced back to a long history. I found this 1970’s postcards in a German second-hand market.
This work is named "Two and One Half, Relic”. Two represents two-dimension world, and the half refers to span of time. I laid these postcards onto the scanner glass to reimage them. The light moved smoothly through the surface of the card, while my finger was also moving gently. Light and time brought the new image a sense of mystery. On the postcard, the side panel of Santa Maria reliquaries are carved with Madonna and Child, twelve apostles. When I moved the postcard on the scanner glass, a shape of females procreation adoration appeared. Meanwhile the Cross of Lothair looks like fire, which alludes Isaiah Verse 43:2: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”
