Women descending the staircase , 2025
Women descending the staircase , 2025
At the staircase's landing, a stone weighing 61.6 kilograms is placed. It comes from the upper reaches of a river in the artist’s hometown and is weighed by the weight of his mother, transforming the existence of the flesh into the permanence of geology. The landing is coated with a layer of lead, which, under its reflective surface, alternates its appearance between bulky and agile. We can also observe traces that seem to be left behind by the movement of the stone. But looking closely beneath the stone, we find pearls pressed underneath. These pearls are from a necklace gifted by the artist’s father to his mother in their youth and seem to be the crucial element behind the stone’s traces. The walls in the hall have pencil marks left behind by the artist, who says that this is inspired by the feeling that the trees and bushes give him when moving the boulder of rock by the river.
The silence of the stone and the traces of movement created by the pearls speak to the audience of two specific qualities contained within memory: a sense of oppression and a force of redemption. Through a dialogue between the material properties of the objects themselves, the artist elevates intimate family memories into a universal allegory of existence. When the river stone from the artist’s hometown meets the staircase in physical space, it evokes the image of the artist’s mother carrying the family’s belongings up and down the stairs under a setting sun. As the love tokens of his parents continue to move through time and space, this installation work ultimately forms a perpetual engine of memory, continuously writing poetry of love and weight within the co-existence of gravity and lift, family, and individuality.
