Lotus Pond, 2024

Every Saturday, the activity at the matchmaking corner of Shanghai People’s Park is kind of like the sale: parents of single persons gather with matchmaking services in the park to market their own consignments on stalls( single sons and daughters), and status and family background of every singe person are clearly marked the price item by item and directly listed on A4-size papers. “Copy”, “scan”, “compare” and other office-related words have been amplified and discussed in the park supposed to be a place for people to relax themselves, and the park at weekends has become an alternative office and exchange.

The artist has noticed the pond of lotus at the matchmaking corner of Shanghai People’s Park, which means Love for All Seasons in Chinese marriage. At one night, the artist took the scanners (a hand-held one and a desk-top one) often used in office to the pond and scanned the lotus. When he took the hand-held scanner and moved back and forth on lotus, the scanner was like a lighted brush depicting them in a freehand way. The images he got was somehow like result of a humble record and recognization rather than a snapshot-like disturbance. Though the tool( the scanner) the artist used was reminiscent of the office culture in modern society, he used it to recognize(record) the lotus in the park. He used a poetic displacement to resist the materialization of the marriage occurring in the city’s park.
