Returning Home
By Heinrich Heine (Lorelei)
I know not if there is a reason
Why I am so sad at heart.
A legend of bygone ages
Haunts me and will not depart.
The air is cool under nightfall.
The calm Rhine courses its way.
The peak of the mountain is sparkling
With evening’s final ray.
On the top of the Aaper-Wald (Aaper Forest) in Düsseldorf there is a place called Frauensteine (Women Stone). According to legend, the flood of the Rhine in the old stone era drowned the entire North Rhine region, and the primitive people were forced to take refuge until they reached the top of the Aaper Wald, where an altar was piled up with stones and a group of white horses were offered for prayer. The gods let the flood recede.
Tracing the trail of this old story, I came to the altar and found the stone nearby. I began to kick it along the path in forest, down the hill. And I coursed with the stone through the city and finally reached the Rhine River, ten kilometers away. I hope this could help this stone return to its hometown, the Rhine, again. The whole route is recorded by drone and camera.
This record of performance is presented on a round screen, projected in the middle ceil. It is a mixed media project. Beneath the plateform of the stone, there is a mini loudspeaker . Sound of stone rolling on road, comes out from a hidden hole. It sounds like telling the story of returning.
By doing this, stone is pulled by the call of the river, where it is from. But what is pulling me? I think it is somewhere in the origin of poetry and arts, where I want to return.
